Why he might be annoying:

He was grouchy.
He was known for his impatience on the movie set.
He insisted on working alone, which caused his special-effects projects to drag on for years.
His animations were sometimes the only good thing about the movies in which they appear.
In the 1980's, new technologies made his effects look clumsy and dated.
In interviews, he constantly complained that movies were better back in his day.
He hated rock music and television.

Why he might not be annoying:

At age 13, he tracked down the animator of 'King Kong' and begged to study with him.
He was on the cutting edge of effects technology for more than 30 years.
Unlike some other special-effects wizards, he gladly shared his secrets with new generations of filmmakers.
He received an honorary Oscar in 1992.
