Why he might be annoying:

He declined an offer to sail with James Cook.
His vaccine against smallpox was actually a mild disease in itself (cowpox).
He tested the vaccine by inoculating a small boy with both cowpox and smallpox, and seeing if he'd get sick.
If the experiment had failed, he would've been a murderer.
He even tested the risky vaccine on his own son.
He was initially ridiculed in his day as a country bumpkin.
Some superstitious folks believed injecting people with cowpox would result in freakish cow-man mutations.

Why he might not be annoying:

Both of his parents died when he was five.
He was a great lover of nature.
He was known for being a kindhearted man.
He never patented his smallpox vaccine in hopes that it could be used freely by anyone.
Given his enormous impact on medical history, he is relatively unknown.
His efforts eventually paid off - smallpox was wiped off the face of the earth by 1980.
He rid mankind of one of its most feared diseases.
