Largest and oldest of Islam's two major branches, the other being Shia
Founded in the Seventh Century AD
Approximately 85% of the world's 1.5 billion Muslims belong to the Sunni faith
Primary rule of faith is the Koran
Their name is derived from an Arabic term referring to the words, actions or example of Muhammad
Its followers also follow Sharia law and Hadith, the oral traditions associated with Muhammad
Why Sunni might be annoying
They developed Sharia law which provides much of the intellectual background for the more odious aspects of Islam ( women must wear veils and can't drive cars, etc.)
They are split into many different branches.
In the countries where they are in the majority, they are often brutally oppressive of non Muslims and/or non Sunni.
All of the 9/11 hijackers were Sunni.
In the Middle Ages they conquered many peoples from Spain to Indonesia and forced them to convert to Islam.
Why Sunni might not be annoying
Like people everywhere, the vast majority of their followers are just, decent and peace loving.
Over the centuries, they have developed an incredible literary tradition.
They don't follow an all-powerful hereditary clergy like the Shia.
In the Middle Ages they were responsible for great advances in art and science.
