The Resume

    (January 10, 1820-May 28, 1849)
Born in Thornton, West Yorkshire, United Kingdom
Youngest member of the Bronte family; sister to Charlotte, Emily, and Branwell Bronte
    Used the Pseudonym, ‘Acton Bell’
Wrote ‘Poems by Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell,’ ‘Agnes Grey,’ and ‘The Tenant of Wildfeld Hall’

Why she might be annoying:

She wrote with a male pseudonym because she believed publishing with her own name would hurt sales, but her first book still sold only three copies.
She is remembered only as ‘the other Bronte sister,’ and not for her written work, despite publishing no less than her sisters.
Her novels contain very graphic elements (ex. detailing the stoning of baby birds in front of the birds’ parents in ‘Agnes Grey’).
She was marginally ignored by Elizabeth Gaskell in her biography, ‘Life of Charlotte Bronte.’
She resigned her teaching position when she found out about her brother’s affair with her employer’s daughter.
When she died, Charlotte decided to ‘lay the flower where it had fallen’ and had her interred outside of the Bronte family plot.
Her headstone said that she died at 28 when she actually died at 29.
It took over 150 years for the correct age of death to be engraved (per order of the Bronte Society).
Stewie refers to 'the third Bronte sister' as an example of an 'outshined sibling' with a crude joke in a 'Family Guy' episode ('ah, its a period-period joke!')

Why she might not be annoying:

She spent the most time nursing and cleaning up after the alcoholic Branwell Bronte, and as such, did not romanticize violent men like her sisters did (Heathcliff, Mr. Rochester).
She sparked controversy when she allowed her heroine in ‘The Tenant of Wildfeld Hall’ to leave her abusive husband.
She was Emily Bronte’s closest family member and was the only one to see her poems before they were found by Charlotte.
She was so dismayed by Emily’s death that it is believed her grief undermined her health.
She died within two years of publishing her first book, and less than a year from her second.
By all accounts, Charlotte was a bitch to her.
After her death, reprints of ‘The Tenant of Wildfeld Hall’ were halted by Charlotte who claimed that it ‘hardly appears desirable to preserve’ (which explains why she’s the least known of the three).
She is the only Bronte sister to find success as a governess.
Her writing is now recognized as the most realistic of the sisters’ works.
The difference between the sisters is hilariously satirized by Kate Beaton in ‘Dude Watchin’ with the Brontes,’ in which her sisters yell at her, ‘you are so inappropriate! No wonder no one buys your books!’
