Best known for his 'Uncle Remus' stories
Wrote 'Uncle Remus: His Songs and Sayings (1881),' 'Nights with Uncle Remus (1883),' 'Mingo and Other Sketches in Black and White (1884),' 'Free Joe and Other Georgian Sketches (1887),' 'Uncle Remus and His Friends (1892)' and 'Uncle Remus and the Little Boy (1905)'

Why he might be annoying:

Although white, he wrote in an African-American dialect.
Some people feel his stories perpetuate racist stereotypes.
He was a Southern writer who hated being called a Southern writer.
He dropped out of high school.
He was painfully shy.
He was so embarrassed of his red hair that he usually wore a huge hat.
He was portly.

Why he might not be annoying:

He never knew his father.
He grew up poor.
He publicly argued for the education of blacks.
He used the popular folk characters Br'er Rabbit and Br'er Fox.
Some critics feel his stories are more subversive and satirical than racist.
Walt Disney turned his books into a movie ('Song of the South') that is considered far more racist than the books themselves.
