    Born in Seale, Alabama
    General in the United States Marine Corps during WWII
    Commander of the V Amphibious Corps during the battles of the Gilbert and Marshall Islands, Saipan and Tinian

Why he might be annoying:

    He was commonly known by the nickname 'Howlin' Mad Smith' throughout his career.
    During WWII, he was rarely seen without a cigar clenched in his teeth.
    He caused controversy during the Battle of Saipan when he relieved and fired an Army general. (1944)

Why he might not be annoying:

    He is considered 'the father of modern amphibious warfare;' a title he earned for his leadership in the Pacific during WWII.
    He was wounded in a skirmish during the US occupation of the Dominican Republic (1915).
    Before entering the military he attended Auburn University and earned a bachelor degree of science.
    Under his command, US Marines perfected amphibious landings and were able to secure all islands invaded under heavy combat.
    He served in the Marine Corps for 41 years.
