The Resume

    (November 27, 1701-April 25, 1744)
    Born in Uppsala, Sweden
    Studied the aurora borealis
Founded the Uppsala Astronomical Observatory (1741)
Developed the Celsius temperature scale (1742)

Why he might be annoying:

He was a student and later professor at the university where his father taught.
His original temperature scale had the boiling point of water at 0 degrees and freezing at 100 -- the scale was flipped after his death.
The US remains a holdout in preferring Fahrenheit over Celsius.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was part of an expedition that measured the length of a degree of latitude in Lapland (while another expedition measured a degree near the equator in Peru) to confirm Isaac Newton's prediction that the earth is flattened at the poles.
He accurately calculated how the boiling point changes with atmospheric pressure.
A crater on the moon was named after him.
A draft of a science fiction novel set on Sirius was discovered among his papers after his death.
