Why he might be annoying:

    He had already earned a reputation for debauchery as a teen at Oxford.
    He married an heiress he had earlier tried to abduct.
    During a period away from court, he practiced as a quack physician.
    He claimed to have been continuously drunk for five years.
    He died from syphilis and alcohol.
    His poems were frequently banned for obscenity and blasphemy.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He graduated from Oxford at age 14.
    He became a popular hero for his courage during the Battle of Vagen against the Dutch navy (August 2, 1665).
    Voltaire called him 'the man of genius, the great poet' and praised his satires for their 'energy and fire.'
    He was portrayed by Johnny Depp in the film 'The Libertine.'
