Slave owned by plantation owner, Joseph Travis
Attempted to start a slave rebellion and killed his owners (August 21, 1831)
Captured by the Virginia state militia
Executed by hanging (November 11, 1831)

Why he might be annoying:

He became convinced that God had chosen him to lead the slaves in the South to freedom.
He wanted to start a nationwide slave rebellion, but only about 80 slaves in all joined him in his cause.
He and his followers killed nearly 50 innocent whites.
In retaliation for his insurrection, 100 innocent slaves were killed across the South.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was a slave and was frequently abused and beaten by white plantation owners.
He wanted to lead his people to freedom from oppression.
He gave hope to countless numbers of blacks trapped in slavery across America.
He made many white slave owners live in fear of what their slaves could do to them.
He inspired many opponents of slavery, including John Brown, to take stands.
