She gained fame as Ryan White's supportive classmate despite only going to the same school as him for two semesters.

As class president, she persuaded school officials to have medical experts talk to students in advance of Ryan White's arrival.
She became friends with Ryan after his mother asked her to drive him to school shortly after they moved into the neighborhood.
She accompanied Ryan White when he went to Washington to testify before an AIDS commission in 1988.
She worked with C. Everett Koop, who later awarded her a national Enhancement of Public and Community Education Award.
In her later years, she worked as a successful dermatologist, and even treated famous Vietnam War burn survivor Kim Phuc.
