Why they might be annoying:

They seem to be a rip-off of the Milwaukee Brewers' sausage races.
A running gag is that Teddy is never allowed to win. (Unless he wins by cheating and then gets disqualified.)
For the first half of the 2006 season, the races were done as a computer-generated scoreboard-only event.
The races are sponsored by Geico, so that lizard is usually hanging out by the finish line.
They underwent 'facelifts' for a new more kid-friendly look (2010).
The Nationals promised victory songs that would vary depending on who won, but failed to follow through (2011).
Some Nationals fans claim that the refusal to let Teddy win is causing a Bambino-esque curse to haunt the team.

Why they might not be annoying:

They are also the four presidents who appear on Mount Rushmore.
They garner more attention than the Nationals' official mascot, Screech.
Nationals' attendance improved an average of 42% on days when racing president bobbleheads were given away (2007).
In the rare event of a game lasting 13 innings, the presidents hold a second race.
In 2008, Teddy Roosevelt entered and finished the Marine Corps Marathon in full costume. (Maybe that explains his record: he's a distance runner, not a sprinter.)
They appeared in the presidential inaugural parade (2009).
They were twice named GameOps.com's Best on Field Promotion (2007,2009).
