    Born in Delft, Netherlands
    Jurist/philosopher/author
    Wrote 'Mare Liberum' ('The Free Seas,' 1609) and 'De jure belli ac pacis' ('On the Law of War and Peace,' 1625)
    Considered the founder of international law

Why he might be annoying:

    His opinions on the freedom of the seas just happened to benefit the Dutch.
    He was sentenced to life imprisonment for heresy and held in Loevestein castle.
    His last words were, 'By understanding many things, I have accomplished nothing.'

Why he might not be annoying:

    He entered the University of Leiden when he was just eleven years old.
    With the help of his wife and her maid, he escaped Loevenstein castle hidden in a book chest and fled to Paris.
    He was granted a royal pension by Louis XIII of France and was named as an ambassador by Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden.
