    Portrayed Marge Stenson in ‘Crapston Villas’ (1995-98), Betty Simpson in ‘Fat Friends’ (2000-05), Angela Cook in ‘The Worst Week of My Life’ (2004-06), Pamela Shipman in ‘Gavin and Stacy’ (2007-10), Joyce in ‘Boomers’ (2014-16), Edith in ‘Hold the Sunset’ (2018-19), and Gail Reynolds in ‘Life’ (2020)

Why she might be annoying:

    Her best and best-known film performances have been in movies directed by her husband, Mike Leigh.
    Although she won an Olivier Award for Best Actress for the stage version of ‘Little Voice,’ she was replaced by Brenda Blethyn when it was adapted into a film. (‘It was very sad for me and I was very upset.’)
    She said she never watches herself on TV because she thinks she looks ‘old and fat.’
    She announced that she was retiring from the theater after developing stage fright (2020).

    At sixteen, she got John Lennon’s autograph after a concert at Liverpool’s Cavern Club; five decades later, she wrote a short film about the encounter for Sky1’s anthology ‘Little Crackers.’

    She and Myra Frances performed the first lesbian kiss on British TV, in a BBC presentation of the play ‘Girl.’ (1974)
    She was named Best Actress by the National Society of Film Critics for ‘Life Is Sweet.’
    She was named an ambassador for the National Wildlife Trust (2016).
