Premise: Eliot Ness and a squad of incorruptible agents take on the Chicago mob
Why The Untouchables might be annoying
Van Heflin and Van Johnson turned down the role of Ness.
Prominent Italian-Americans, such as Frank Sinatra, protested what they saw as stereotyping.
Critics protested the 'excessive and senseless' violence.
Several FBI agents complained about their successes being attributed to Ness.
Stack declined to return for a fifth season after suffering a vocal cord hemorrhage caused by the hectic pace of production.
Why The Untouchables might not be annoying
The Chicago mob reportedly considered rubbing out producer Desi Arnaz for focussing attention on the Mafia before deciding a hit would cause more trouble than it was worth.
To counter the claims of anti-Italian stereotyping, later episodes gave more prominence to agent Enrico Rossi.
Guest stars on the series included Lee Marvin, James Caan, Martin Balsam, Peter Falk, Telly Savalas and Barbara Stanwyck.
It was made into a popular Oscar-winning movie (1987).
