He was given one year probation from the baseball commissioner's office for gambling, where he lost $50,000 playing poker (1991).
He got into a drunk driving accident, smashing into a tree,
injuring himself and teammate Darren Daulton (1991).
He was addicted to chewing tobacco.
He was sentenced to three years in prison after pleading guilty to grand theft auto and providing a false financial statement (March 5, 2012).

He was know for his gritty play, diving all over the field, and rarely left the game with a clean uniform.
He was a key component of the 1986 World Champion Mets and the 1993 National League Champion Phillies.
He had various injuries that limited his playing time in later years and forced him to retire at the age of 33.
He quit using chewing tobacco and spoke out against it.
He is left handed.
