The Resume

    (December 9, 1899-October 16, 1937)
    Born in Paris, France
    Author and illustrator
Created the character Babar the Elephant
Wrote 'The Story of Babar,' 'The Travels of Babar,' 'Babar the King,' 'A.B.C. of Babar,' 'Zephir's Holidays,' 'Babar and His Children' and 'Babar and Father Christmas'

Why he might be annoying:

Babar was actually created by his wife Cecile, as a bedtime story she told to their children.
The first Babar book was published by a firm that happened to be run by his brother-in-law.
Some critics argue that the Babar books are propaganda for the 'civilizing' benefits of French colonialism.

Why he might not be annoying:

He offered his wife co-author credit on the first Babar book. (She declined.)
He was commissioned to decorate the children's dining room of the luxury liner Normandie with pictures of Babar.
A.A. Milne wrote, 'If you who are grown-up have never been fascinated by a picture book before, then this is the one which will fascinate you.'
