Why he might be annoying:

He said, 'I recoil in horror at most that goes on in real life. I try to keep my head buried in the late 60s.'
He is often accused of writing weird songs for the sake of weirdness.
The authors of 'The Worst Rock and Roll Records of All Time' came up with 'the Robyn Hitchcock rule': 'Cult artists are frequently just as boring and predictable as mainstream ones.'
One critic wrote, 'The key to understanding him is that he can produce simply gorgeous songs and also execrable turkeys. If he had culled two thirds of his songs, he would be as famous as Leonard Cohen.'

Why he might not be annoying:

'Trouser Press' called him 'one of the great undiscovered treasures of pop music.'
He was an influence on R.E.M. and the Replacements.
He performed several benefit concerts for Doctors Without Borders.
He said, 'I should be profoundly grateful that I've managed to make a living without actually ever having a hit.'
