(September 27, 1840-December 7, 1902)
Established the donkey and elephant as symbols of the Democratic and Republican parties in his cartoons.
Created Columbia, the symbol of America.
Gave us the present-day conception of Uncle Sam and Santa Claus.

Why he might be annoying:

He didn't like school, and was in danger of failing.
He was known as a 'presidential maker.'
He refused to support James Blaine for president, and was abandoned by many Republican friends.
In 1886, he started his own journal, 'Nast's Weekly,' but it failed and went into heavy debt.

Why he might not be annoying:

He established many of America's political symbols.
He was an opponent of slavery, and a fierce supporter of the Union cause.
In 1864, he published the illustration 'Compromise with the South' that brought him instant fame.
Lincoln called him 'our best recruiting sergeant.'
He has a strong influence in politics through his cartoons and engravings.
He played an important role in the development of political caricature.
He was a champion for civil rights for all citizens.
He died from yellow fever.
