Doctor

The Resume

    (March 29, 1883-June 2, 1943)
    Doctor of Callander, Ontario
Attending physician at the birth of the Dionne Quintuplets (Yvonne [d. 2001], Annette, Cecile, Emilie [d. 1954] and Marie [d. 1970]) on May 28, 1934
Wrote a newspaper column (1938-c.1942) dealing with the Quints and their application in child care
Appeared in numerous advertisements involving the Quints

Why he might be annoying:

    He was a notorious stammerer.
Judging by plenty of photographs involving the Quints from 1934 on, many were led to believe that Dr. Dafoe was the 'real' father of the Quints.
He coerced Oliva Dionne into signing an exhibition deal involving the Century of Progress Exhibition in Chicago. In much haste, advising him that 'they [the Quints] don't have all that much longer to live anyway,' Oliva reneged within days.
His induction into the Circus Saints and Sinners Club in New York in 1938 (as 'Doctor of Litters') was quickly dismissed as an exercise in low comedy at a rather crucial time in a custody dispute between Dr. Dafoe (in his role on the Board of Guardians) and Oliva Dionne, the Quints' father.
He didn't take too kindly to the suggestion of 'Papa Dionne' that the Quints be educated in French exclusively, and under a Catholic model of education.

Why he might not be annoying:

He believed (and rightly so) that the Quints had a better chance of survival in Northern Ontario as opposed to, say, Toronto or New York City.
He had much sense in selecting the endorsement deals involving the Quints, especially those for Colgate's Dental Cream, Karo Syrup, Lysol and Quaker Oats.
He appeared in numerous radio broadcasts promoting Ontario (and especially the 'Quintland' region around North Bay/Callander) as a vacation spot in the late 1930's.
His accounts about the daily routine of the Dionne Quints, both in newspapers and on radio, could easily be related to by many mothers.
He was the inspiration for the 'Dr. Christian' role of the late Jean Hershholt on radio and in films.
