    Born in Brooklyn, New York
    Poetry collections include 'Genesis: Book One' (1943), 'Vaudeville for a Princess and Other Poems' (1950) and 'Summer Knowledge: New and Selected Poems' (1959)
    Short story collections include 'In Dreams Begin Responsibilities' (1938), 'The World Is a Wedding' (1948) and 'Successful Love and Other Stories' (1961)

Why he might be annoying:

    He abused alcohol, amphetamines and barbiturates.
    He was married and divorced twice.
    At his first wedding, he got so drunk at the reception that he passed out.
    He was hauled off to Bellevue mental hospital in handcuffs and a straightjacket after he attacked an art critic who he convinced himself was having an affair with his second wife.
    He became increasingly reclusive in his last years.
    After he died of a heart attack in a hotel lobby, his body went unidentified at the morgue for two days.

Why he might not be annoying:

    When he was nine, his parents woke him up in the middle of the night, announced they were separating, and said he had to choose immediately which parent he wanted to live with.
    Vladimir Nabokov called Schwartz's short story 'In Deams Begin Responsibilities' one of his 'half a dozen favorites' in contemporary literature.
    Poet Allen Tate said his style was 'the first real innovation we've had since Eliot and Pound.'
    He was the youngest recipient of the Bollingen Prize for poetry (1959).
    John Berryman dedicated a book of poetry to him and Lou Reed dedicated the songs 'European Son' and 'My House' to him.
    He was the inspiration for the titular character in Saul Bellow's Pulitzer Prize winning novel 'Humboldt's Gift.'
