Why he might be annoying:

    He did not become a priest until he was 45.
    He refused all requests for clemency in the case of Beatrice Cenci and had the Cenci family properties seized by the Papacy.
    He issued a number of restrictions on where Jews could live in the Papal States and the types of economic activities they could participate in.
    He spent much of the later years of his papacy bedridden with gout.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He went from priest to pope in only twelve years.
    He set up an alliance of nations to oppose expansion of the Ottoman Empire into Eastern Europe (1595).
    He negotiated a peace treaty between France and Spain (1598).
    He is credited with giving church sanction to coffee drinking, earning the gratitude of everyone who cannot face the morning without that extra caffeine jolt.
