Football Player

The Resume

Why he might be annoying:

Despite great numbers, he was frequently let go from teams after clashing with the coaches or management.
The Bills originally wanted Ernie Davis as their fullback and signed Gilchrist only because Davis chose the NFL over the AFL.
Bills fans would chant, 'Lookie, lookie, lookie, that's our Cookie.'
Before games in December, he would sell Christmas trees outside Buffalo's War Memorial Stadium.
He was arrested for punching an officer after running a stop sign (1963).

Why he might not be annoying:

He was the first AFL player to rush for 1,000 yards in a season (1962).
Despite being with the Bills for only three seasons, as of 2009 he was still one of their top five all-time rushers.
After black players were refused service in New Orleans hotels and restaurants, he organized a boycott that got the 1965 AFL All-Star game moved from New Orleans to Houston.
He said most of his problems with team management came from standing up for his principles at a time when black athletes were expected to remain quiet.
