Died in a fire on launch pad during tests on Apollo 1 (January 27, 1967)
Posthumously awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor
Awarded the United States Navy Air Medal

He chose a dangerous career despite having a wife and two children.
Guns and hunting were among his hobbies.
He was a member of the Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity house.
Throughout his career as a pilot and astronaut, he tried very hard to cover up his poor eyesight.
He was a math teacher.

He served his country in the Navy.
He never got to fly in space.
He has a star, a scholarship, a street, a planetarium, a school, an artificial island and a crater on the far side of the moon named in his honor.
He held a Bachelor of Science in aeronautical engineering.
He was a talented musician and skilled model builder.
When fire broke out in the capsule of his Apollo 1 craft he remained strapped to his couch attempting to radio an emergency message to control.
