Why he might be annoying:

He had an ulcer at age 24 (1990).
He suffers from the problems of any show that takes phone calls.
Most of the time the callers are not interesting; they just call to satisfy their ego, in hopes of being 'caller of the day.'
He is the one who gets paid and expects the callers to be inciteful and help the show for free.
If he finds them disagreeable he can hang up on them, have the final say and call them names.
He claims to 'tell it like it is' (can you be more cliche? What else can you steal from Howard Cosell).
When quarterback, Jim Everett, was a guest on his show, he kept calling him Chris Evert.
Everett repeatedly asked him to stop, but Rome continued, even though Everett threatened if he did it again he would not stand for it.
Trying to show macho childishness, Rome persisted and Everett finally lost it and knocked Rome off his chair (April, 1994).
His nickname is 'Van Smack.'
His idea of hip cool humor is to direct his callers (which he calls clones) to 'not suck.'
He sells his clothing wares on his web page.
He claims NASCAR drivers should not be called athletes.
He hates soccer.
He put a bounty on Gordie Howe when Howe announced his plan to play one shift with the IHL's Detroit Vipers (1998).

Why he might not be annoying:

His favorite sports movie is 'Slapshot' followed by 'Caddyshack.'
He has an interesting aggressive interviewing technique.
He tries to bring sports to the same level of importance as news.
He keeps a lot of sports fans entertained.
Let's face it, he is harmless.
