He might have survived if he had kept up with his doctor's appointments during and before his run.
He died young.

Why he might not be annoying:

He lost his left leg to cancer at eighteen.
His Marathon of Hope raised $24.17M for cancer research, more than one dollar per Canadian (1981).
He was forced to quit his run in Thunder Bay, Ontario because cancer had reappeared in his lungs.
He ran his marathon on a prosthetic leg.
The Annual Terry Fox Run attracts thousands of participants each year, raising millions of dollars towards cancer research.
Partly due to his efforts, those diagnosed with ostogenic sarcoma (the same form of cancer Terry Fox had) have a much higher survival rate.
He inspired Rick Hansen, a paraplegic wheelchair athlete, to do his own marathon for spinal cord injury research.
