The misadventures of a kindhearted but incredibly clumsy student – with no sorcery lineage – at Miss Cackle’s Academy for Witches

Why The Worst Witch might be annoying:

The series was an outgrowth of a 1986 TV special, re-aired every Hallowe’en for about a decade, with a Canadian in the title role and an American as one of the educators.
The titular character only got accepted into the academy because of a poem.
The token minorities – a black (Ruby) and a South Asian (Jadu) – were at best minor characters, though far from invisible.
Agatha Cackle was actually a minor character, the genuinely evil twin of the upright academy headmistress.
Oh, how many times the school had to be saved and how many times the staff and student body had to save each others' skins.
When Allen took over for Jones in the role of Ethel, it was attributed to a ‘witch-over’ (or magical makeover; it was still an explanation).

Why The Worst Witch might not be annoying:

    Waaaaaaayyyyyyyyy before Hogwarts
Murphy also did all of the drawings for the books.
Similar to the books, almost all of the cast was female.
The first two seasons dramatized two books apiece; the third was not based on any book.
It put a human, or non-greenish, face on the witch stereotype (also alluded to in the academy song).
It spawned at least two spinoffs — the short-lived 'Weirdsister College,' which reunited Mildred and Ethel and featured a host of non-Brits; and 'The New Worst Witch,' featuring Mildred’s younger and no less clumsy sister (which lasted a year).
