The Resume

    (October 23, 1960-July 25, 2008)
    Born in United States
    Based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Former Professor at Carnegie Mellon University
    Graduate of Brown University
Gave his now-famous last lecture in September 2007 based on his life experiences, lessons learned and following one’s passions
Diagnosed with advanced pancreatic cancer in summer of 2007

Why he might be annoying:

In the opening moments of his Last Lecture, he did push-ups that rivaled those of Jack Palance’s during Palance’s famous Oscar acceptance speech.
In the same opening, he showed the audience the CAT scans of his pancreas and the cancerous tumors.
Some of his life philosophies are comparable to the teachings of ’The Secret.’ (‘If you lead your life the right way, the karma will take care of itself; the dreams will come to you.’)

Why he might not be annoying:

At the time of his lecture, doctors gave him anywhere from a few weeks to a few months to live.
His lecture was really intended for the three young sons he would leave behind when he dies.
His lecture video was downloaded more than one million times.
He repeated his moving and compelling speech on ’Oprah.’
He was cheery and humorous during his Last Lecture.
One of his philosophies: ‘If you wait long enough, other people will show you their good side.’
His scholarship program will provide educational funding for women pursuing computer science.
One of the standout jokes in his speech was: ‘I have experienced a deathbed conversion… I just bought a MacIntosh.’
He was successfully treated for pancreatic cancer the first time he was diagnosed with it but the cancer later returned.
