5-time leader in fielding percentage among 1st basemen (1951-1955)

Why he might be annoying:

His surname was hard to spell.
He was injury prone.
During a 1953 spring training game against the Yankees, Mickey Mantle saw him and exclaimed 'Jesus Christ! Did they shave a gorilla and train him to play ball?'

Why he might not be annoying:

He was left handed.
Because Reds management wouldn't pay for specially tailored uniforms to fit his enormous arms, his wife cut the sleeves off his jerseys.
Unlike some home run kings today, he got his incredible strength legitimately, and not with steroids.
He is mentioned in the refrain of the classic Terry Cashman song 'Talkin' Baseball.'
Ted Williams said 'the first person to die from being hit by a batted ball is going to be some poor sap walking outside Crosley Field, and the batter will be Big Klu.'
At Great American Ball Park, the Reds' 1-foot all beef frank hot dog is named in his honor.
A life size bronze statue of him greets Reds fans at home games.
