    Served in the Royal Scots Greys, the Special Air Service (SAS) and the Omani army
    With Charles Burton, circumnavigated the globe along the polar axis (1979-82)
    With Burton, navigated the Northwest Passage in an open boat (1981)
    With Mike Stroud, made the first crossing of Antarctica without outside support (1992-93)
    Climbed Mount Everest (2009)
    Named 'World's Greatest Living Explorer' by the Guiness Book of Records (1984)
    Cousin of actors Joseph and Ralph Fiennes

Why he might be annoying:

    He admitted that he cheated on the march portion of the SAS physical by hitching a lift with a farmer.
    He was expelled from the SAS after stealing explosives with plans to blow up a dam erected by the producers of 'Dr. Doolittle' in the village of Castle Combe.
    He was considered for the role of James Bond but was rejected by producer Cubby Broccoli for having 'hands too big and a face like a farmer.'
    After developing severe frostbite in his left hand during an Arctic expedition, he become so impatient with his surgeon's insistence on waiting several months before amputation that he cut off his own fingertips with a fretsaw.
    He is a mountain climber with a fear of heights.
    During one of his mountaineering expeditions, he faked accidents to provide exciting TV footage.

Why he might not be annoying:

    His father died in battle three and half months before Ranulph was born.
    He was decorated for bravery by the sultanate of Oman.
    Despite having undergone heart bypass surgery four months earlier, he competed in seven marathons on seven continents in seven days for the Land Rover 7x7x7 Challenge (2003).
    Most of his endurance events are also fundraisers for charity.
    He was named Britain's top celebrity fundraiser by JustGiving (2010), having raised £2.5 million for Marie Curie Cancer Care over the previous two years.
