The Resume

    (July 1980- )
    Anthropomorphic bloodhound
Mascot for the National Crime Prevention Council

Why he might be annoying:

He was nameless for his first two years on the air.
Baseball player Fred McGriff was nicknamed 'Crime Dog' because of the similarity of their names.
Like Scooby-Doo, he is often accompanied by an irritating nephew, Scruff.
If you are promoting child safety, is it really a good idea to have your spokesdog dressed in the sort of trench coat that a flasher would wear?

Why he might not be annoying:

He was named in a nationwide contest, with the winning entry submitted by a New Orleans police officer.
He raises awareness about issues such as drugs, bullying and identity theft.
In a survey, 80% of children said they would be 'likely' or 'very likely' to listen to his advice on crime prevention issues.
His image adorns 700 McGruff houses providing a safe refuge for children in danger.
