Why he might be annoying:

For much of his baseball career, he was an undisciplined hitter until Ted Williams, newly hired as manager of the Senators (1969), asked him 'Can you tell me how a guy can hit 44 home runs and only get 48 bases on balls,' and convinced him to work pitchers deeper into the count.
He vented his frustration over a poor performance by breaking a bat over his knee (April 13, 1969).
When he was unable to get a Major League team to sign him, he went to Japan to play with the Taiheiyo Club Lions (1974). In his first at-bat with the team, he injured his back while swinging his bat and never played again.
In his two managerial stints, he led his teams to last place in their division.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was an All-American in both baseball and basketball at Ohio State.
He set a still-standing (as of the end of the 2021 season) record by hitting ten home runs in a week (May 12-18, 1968).
He hit a one-handed home run while playing with the Tigers.
Ted Williams called him 'with question the biggest, strongest guy who ever played this game.'
