He had deep psychological problems.
Some critics were baffled by his ‘paint explosion’ style.
Some called him ‘Jack the Dripper.’
He cheated on his wife.
He was rude, vulgar and mean-spirited.
He was a terrible drunk.
He eventually was unable to paint because of his alcoholism.
He died driving drunk, also killing one of his passengers.

He’s considered one of the greatest 20th-century painters.
‘Time Magazine’ called him ‘the greatest living American artist.’
One critic called him ‘arguably, the first American who ever lived’ (um, ‘arguably’ is right).
A crazed man vandalized one of his paintings in Rome (1999).
