    Studied violin at the Academy of Music in Tel Aviv
    Moved to the U.S. to study at the Juilliard School
    Professional debut at Carnegie Hall (1963)
    President Ronald Reagan presented him 'Medal of Liberty' (1986)
    President Bill Clinton awarded him the 'National Medal of Arts' (2000)
    Performed at the 2009 inauguration ceremony of President Barack Obama
    Released the 20 CD box set 'The Itzhak Perlman Collection' (1995)

Why he might be annoying:

    He looks like a care bear.
    He's been on PBS so many times you'd swear he was shilling for them.
    In 1987, he was guest star on 'Shalom Sesame,' a Jewish version of 'Sesame Street,' with a big porcupine named Kippi replacing Big Bird.
    He was nominated for five Emmys between 1981-91 and came up empty before hitting pay dirt in 1992.
    The Perlman Music Program he founded in 1995 to teach young musicians (ages 11-18) has expensive tuition, though some have applied for financial aid.
    One of his sons became a lawyer.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He contracted polio at age four, which robbed him of the use of his legs.
    Though a classical musician, he has obtained rock star/ superstar status.
    He owns four 18th century violins, including two rare Stradivarius'.
    He appeared five times on 'The Ed Sullivan Show' (1958-64).
    He has toured several times with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, and has given first ever concerts in Warsaw and Budapest (1987).
    Other notable first time ever concerts include Moscow and Leningrad in 1990 (a Tchaikovsky birthday event) and both China and India in 1994.
    He has soloed and guest conducted for some of the biggest orchestras, including New York, Chicago, Boston, Philadelphia and London.
    He has won 15 Grammys and three Emmys.
    Collaborating with composer John Williams on Steven Spielberg' 1993 movie 'Schindler's List' earned him an Academy Award.
    He's been married to his wife Toby, a classically trained violinist, since 1966.
