The Resume

    (March 2, 1859-May 13, 1916)
    Born in Pereyaslav, Ukraine
    Birth name was Solomon Rabinowich
Pen name derived from the Hebrew expression for 'peace be with you'
Wrote 'Stempenyu,' 'Tevye's Daughters,' 'Mottel the Cantor's Son' and 'Wandering Stars'
Stories about Tevye the Milkman inspired the musical 'Fiddler on the Roof'

Why he might be annoying:

He said his first 'serious' writing was a glossary of the epithets said by his stepmother.
He made a fortune when he married one of his students, the daughter of a wealthy landowner, then lost it speculating in stocks.
He had such a fear of the number 13 that in his manuscripts the thirteenth page was numbered '12a.'

Why he might not be annoying:

He was the leading figure in Yiddish literature.
He was known as 'the Jewish Mark Twain' for their similar styles of humor.
He left Russia for America after a series of anti-semitic pogroms (1905).
He died on the 13th, so maybe he was onto something with his triskaidekaphobia.
He wrote, 'Let my name be recalled with laughter or not at all.'
