Why he might be annoying:

He looks like Howdy Doody.
When he first hit the airwaves, his soulful voice led many to assume he was a black singer.
'Never Gonna Give You Up' is #28 on VH1's '50 Most Awesomely Bad Songs... Ever' (2004).
His record company made him use the same band that backed Bananarama.
He fired his producers and quit his record company after just two albums because he felt he was being used as a 'puppet' (which is apropos for 'Howdy Doody').
After the 80's ended, his career pretty much did as well.

Why he might not be annoying:

He can play drums, piano/keyboards, guitar and saxophone.
He rejected a record deal when he was lead singer for the band FBI, because the offer was not extended to the rest of the band. A year later the band realized they were holding him back and gave their blessing for him to go solo.
'Never Gonna Give You Up' reached #1 in the UK, the US, Japan, Australia and 13 other countries.
It stayed #1 in the UK for five weeks and was the #1 record of the year (1987).
His songs were in the UK charts for the first six months of his career.
He is in the Guinness Book of Records as the first male solo artist to have his first 8 singles reach the Top 10 in the UK.
He retired to spend more time with his daughter.
