The Resume

    (1953- )
    Born in Los Angeles, California
Classic lineup: Curtis Williams, Cleveland Duncan, Dexter Tisby and Bruce Tate
Current (2010) lineup consists of Duncan, Walter Saulsberry and Glenn Madison
Best known for the song 'Earth Angel'

Why they might be annoying:

    They are a one-hit wonder.
After the success of 'Earth Angel,' they were signed to Mercury Records along with The Platters.
The Platters, who were only signed as a stipulation for signing the Penguins, would go on to produce a string of hit singles afterwards, while The Penguins never garnered another hit.
An all-white group, the Crew-Cuts, had a version of Earth Angel chart five spots higher than the original. This was due to segregation of playlists of radio stations at the time.
They got their name after looking at a penguin mascot for Kool cigarettes, which one of the members happened to smoke. Not to mention that the group themselves thought they were 'cool.'

Why they might not be annoying:

'Earth Angel,' which has been credited as one of the first crossover r&b pop hits, ranked 151 (2004) and 152 (2010) in Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs.
'Earth Angel' was also used in a pivotal scene in 'Back to the Future.'
In 2004 'Earth Angel' was added to the National Recording Registry, whose members are chosen by the Library of Congress.
Also in 2004 they were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame.
They still perform today, with 'Earth Angel' main vocalist Cleveland Duncan leading the way.
