Despite being a control pitcher, he tied an AL record of hitting four batters in a game (June 15, 1968).

After his famous surgery, Dr. Jobe said Tommy John would never pitch again, but he did for another decade and a half.
Pete Rose said: 'I know they had to graft a new arm on John, but did they have to give him Sandy Koufax's?'
He had great control and needed only to rely on just two pitches a slider and a sinker.
His two year old son Travis survived a fall out of a three-story window (August 1981).
