Why he might be annoying:

He got his show biz moniker when a club owner decided to name him after Mel Torme and misspelled it.
He had to have his lines for 'Coronation Street' taped on the side of cereal boxes and inside bowls, or otherwise hidden on the set.
After suffering his second heart attack (2002), he said, 'I feel like a cat running out of lives,' but continued chain smoking.
He said that a breathing device he wore to bed because of sleep apnea left him 'looking and sounding like an alien.'

Why he might not be annoying:

He was married to his childhood sweetheart Alma for 50 years.
He went from being an extra on 'Coronation Street' to become one of the stars.
'Coronation Street' co-star William Roache said, 'He had amazing comic timing and was a genuinely warm and wonderful human being.'
He left 'Coronation Street' not because of his own health problems, but to spend time with his son Carl, who had been diagnosed with a brain tumor.
He said, 'If I die tomorrow, they'll have to prise the smile off my face, because I've had such a good life.'
