Why Sports Night might be annoying
The network insisted on a laugh track over Sorkin's objections.
Charles and Sorkin both threatened to quit during a dispute over a line reading.
Although ABC paid Touchstone Television an above-average $800,000 per episode, each episode cost $1.2 million to make.
Touchstone lost $15 million on the series.
In a jab at ABC's inability to make the show a hit, a character in the last episode declares, 'Anybody who can't make money off of Sports Night should get out of the money-making business.'
HBO and Showtime expressed interest in picking up the show but Sorkin let the series lapse so he could concentrate on The West Wing.
A character in Family Guy called it 'a comedy that's too good to be funny.'
Why Sports Night might not be annoying
The volume of the laugh track was faded through the first season and was abandoned in season two.
It featured rapid-fire, witty dialogue.
Guillaume's real-life stroke was written into the series.
Much of the crew went on to the West Wing.
After the pilot, Michael Eisner told Sorkin, 'Keep this up and it'll be the next Seinfeld.'
In a cover story, TV Guide called it 'the best show you're not watching.'
