Internet Browser

The Resume

    (March 1991- )
    Text-only browser
Originated at the University of Kansas
Early origins: Herb Harris, (Assistant Director of User Services at the University of Kansas) called for a 'campus-wide information system - CWIS' (1989)
Developed by Garrett Blythe, Lou Montulli, Michael Grobe Vijay Kolli, and Charles Rezac

Why Lynx might be annoying:

It is a plain vanilla text only operating system.
People confused it with the Linux operating system.
    It is rarely updated.
It is difficult to find the correct language or latest release for any given o/s.
There was an attempt to move Linx into the public domain, since more than a dozen outsiders contributed code. However the University of Kansas refused granting it only General Public Licensing.

Why Lynx might not be annoying:

It was the first viable browser to incorporate hypertext (HTML tags).
It was the first viable browser to integrate most of the internet resources services such as Gopher, HTTP, WAIS, FTP and NNTP (usernet news groups).
It outlasted almost all of its competitors such as Amaya, Cello, IBM WebExplorer, SlipKnot and Viola.
It is still the most popular text based browser.
It is used by the visually impaired.
The program was provided free for use at educational facilities.
It was developed during a less greedy time on the Internet, when many computer guys worked together without compensation for the satisfaction of improving the product.
Developers Lou and Garrett were hired by Netscape.
