Why he might be annoying:

He originally planned to be a veterinarian until he decided he was not big enough to work with horses.
Hardcore country fans accused him of selling out when he added strings to his mid-60s singles, pioneering the 'countrypolitan' sound.
'For the Good Times' was the only one of his songs to cross over to the pop Top 40.
He faded into obscurity and noted after a 1999 marijuana bust, 'Everybody thought I was dead at that point.'
He said about his proposed memoirs, 'I'm going to title it, 'For the Good Times.... My Ass!''
He was prematurely reported dead one day before it actually happened.

Why he might not be annoying:

He served with the Marines in World War II.
He was good friends with Hank Williams, Sr., and served as Hank's substitute at the Grand Ole Opry whenever Williams went missing or was too drunk to perform.
He popularized the 'Ray Price shuffle,' a 4/4 beat with a walking bassline.
Willie Nelson, Roger Miller and Johnny PayCheck were members of his backing band, the Cherokee Cowboys.
He said about his move from honky-tonk to countrypolitan, 'There’s no difference between singing a country song in a Western suit and then going around behind the curtain and walking out the other side with a tux on and singing the same country song with a pop arrangement.'
At age 81, he co-headlined the 'Last of the Breed' tour (2007) with Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard, who said, 'I told Willie when it was over, 'That old man gave us a goddamn singing lesson.''
