A third of the population died from the plague (1711-12).
Its royal palace burned down twice (1794,1884).
During the Napoleonic Wars, it was bombarded by the British, killing 1,600 (September, 1807).
It is one of the most expensive cities in the world.
The UN promoted the 2009 Climate Change Conference in the city with a 'Let's turn Copenhagen into Hopenhagen' campaign.

Over a third of its workers commute by bike.
It is developing new green spaces as part of a policy that, by 2015, every citizen will be able to reach a park or beach within 15 minutes on foot.
Its buildings won awards from the Royal Institute of British Architects four consecutive years (2005-08).
Travelers voted it the cleanest city in Europe.
It was named Most Livable City in the World by Monacle magazine (2008).
