His offensive performance in college significantly lowered his draft stock.
He recorded 18 throwing errors during his first season as the A's starting shortstop.
To make things worse, he led the majors in errors with 35 that season.
Despite posting solid numbers with Oakland, he didn't receive mainstream recognition until he signed with Toronto.

He was able to improve his defensive game significantly under Ron Washington in Oakland.
He set a major league record for home runs hit by a player, who started 75% of his games at second base.
His versatility to play both middle infield positions made him a valuable asset in both Oakland and Toronto.
He was named the starting second baseman for the American League in his first MLB All-Star Game appearance (2021).
