Hockey Player
    (July 28, 1939-May 12, 1977)
    Born in Weston, Ontario, Canada
    Died in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Defenseman for the Boston Bruins (1965-66) and the Philadelphia Flyers (1970-74)
He was primarily a depth defenseman in the Bruins organization.
After playing a handful of games in 1965-66, he didn't play a single NHL game in a four year period before being traded to Philadelphia.
He was an integral part of the surge of the 'Broad Street Bullies' of the 1970's.
His career ended prematurely after he took a puck in the eye as a result of not wearing a helmet.
He initially balked at accepting an assistant coaching position with the Flyers the following season, feeling the team only offered it to him out of pity.
He was a member of both the Flyers Stanley Cup winning teams (1974 as a player, 1975 as a coach).
He established himself as a mainstay on the Flyers blueline following his trade to the club.
He was diagnosed with leukemia during the 1975-76 season, which forced him to step down as the team's assistant coach.
Following his death, the Flyers established the Barry Ashbee Memorial Trophy, given to the team's best defenseman.
His jersey #4 was the first one retired by the Flyers franchise.
