Musician

The Resume

    (October 20, 1934-August 9, 1974)
    Born in Boston, Massachusetts
Birth name was William Edward Chiaiese
Formed the nine piece jazz rock band Chase in 1971
    Recorded 'Get It On'
Died in a plane crash in Jackson, Minnesota at age 39

Why he might be annoying:

He was a classically trained musician and bounced between instruments (including violin and drums) before settling on the trumpet.
Though his father played trumpet in a marching band, he stated his dad wasn't the inspiration for that instrument.
He was nominated for a Best New Artist Grammy in 1971, but lost to Carly Simon.
He said of his trumpet playing, 'I love to play it. I love the sound of it, and as I play and get older, it gets stronger. The longer I play the trumpet, the more I like to play it, the better I'm getting at playing it, and the more fun I have with it.' (is he talking about playing music or having sex?)

Why he might not be annoying:

He came from a musical family - his granfather could play piano by ear and his great-uncle was the first trombone player with the New York Philharmonic and the Metropolitan Opera.
He emulated his hero Maynard Ferguson.
While playing a gig, he spotted Ferguson and said, 'If you ever need a trumpet player, call me up,' and surprisingly, a few months later, he did.
He played with Ferguson in 1958, Stan Keaton in 1959 and Woody Herman in the early to mid-60s.
Once he heard the Beatles, he shifted from straight jazz to a rock-jazz fusion, combining the best of both worlds.
'Get It On,' with its layered horn section and tight rhythm arrangement, spent 13 weeks on the singles chart in 1971, and helped his debut album 'Chase' sell more than 400,000 units.
He was able to record just three albums before tragedy struck.
When the plane he was riding to a gig crashed, he was killed instantly, along with three band members, the pilot and a female companion.
