    Born in Boston, Massachusetts
    Founding member of the Union Pacific Railway
    Ran for president as an independent candidate (1872)
    Made three around-the-world trips (best time: 60 days in 1892)
    Self-styled as the 'Great American Crank'

Why he might be annoying:

    He was a vegetarian.
    He greeted people by shaking his own hand.
    After his unsuccessful presidential bid, he ran for dictator of the US, advocating an invasion of Canada and a new calendar based on his birth date.
    Late in life, he refused to speak to anyone but children and animals.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He was orphaned at age four when his parents died in a yellow fever epidemic.
    He was a self-made multi-millionaire, earning fortunes in shipping, railroads and real estate.
    He provided financial support for Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton's suffragist newspaper 'The Revolution.'
    His round-the-world trips inspired Jules Verne to create Phileas Fogg.
