The Resume

    (July 14, 1907-September 18, 1996)
Born in La Varenne Saint Hilaire, France
Birth name was Suzanne Georgette Charpentier
French matinee idol of the 30s and 40s
    Married Tyrone Power (1939-48)
Made her film debut in Abel Gance's 'Napoleon' (1927)
Best known for her portrayal of Beatrice in René Clair's 'Le Million' (1931)
Made English-language films 'Wings of the Morning,' 'Under the Red Robe,' 'The Baroness and the Butler,' 'Suez,' 'Bomber's Moon,' 'Bridal Suite,' 'Moon,' '13 Rue Madeleine,' and 'Tonight We Raid Calais'
Also acted in 'Hotel du Nord,' 'Anne-Marie,' 'Misdeal,' 'La Bandera,' 'La Maison de la Fleche,' 'His Highness Love,' 'Spring Shower,' 'Companion Wanted,' 'A Son from America,' 'Bastille Day,' 'Mademoiselle Josette, My Woman,' 'Dinner at the Ritz,' and 'Citadel of Silence'

Why she might be annoying:

She had an extramarital affair with Roald Dahl.
She was signed as Fox's answer to Garbo and Dietrich.
She repeatedly refused a movie contract, and only relented after Fox agreed to shoot her films in England.
She married Tyrone Power and then cheated on him while he was serving overseas during WWII.
But then, in all fairness, its not like her husband wasn't cheating on her right, left, and sideways anyways, and the marriage was strained by her refusal to grant him a divorce to marry Judy Garland (she was doing the guy a favor).
She chalked up most of their marital tension to the added stress of the war, but privately much of it revolved around Power's frustration over her inability to produce a son (although some claimed it bothered her more).
She returned to post-war Europe after they divorced and attempted to jumpstart her movie career, but failed to make a comeback and retired after a 1952 appearance in the television show, 'Suspense.'
After his divorce from Linda Christian, Tyrone paid her a visit at her apartment to tell her he had 'made a mistake' and wanting to reconcile. When she expressed no interest, he told her he would take the stairs instead of the elevator so that she would have time to catch him if he changed her mind (he made it all the way down the stairs by himself).

Why she might not be annoying:

She chose her stage name after reading the famous Edgar Allan Poe poem, 'Anabel Lee.'
She was widowed in her early 20s, shortly after giving birth.
Her brother was shot and killed by the Nazis.
She won the Volpi Cup for Best Actress at the Venice Film Festival (1936).
She struggled to get her mother and daughter out of Nazi-occupied France (Tyrone had to legally adopt the child for it to happen).
She drew the ire of Darryl F. Zanuck for marrying Tyrone (he preferred his stars to be single).
She had a Fox contract but barely got offers after getting married (before, Zanuck had offered her a multi-movie deal overseas to keep her from Tyrone. She refused).
Her daughter, Anne, would later suffer with marital difficulties of her own, after marrying the alcoholic suicidal Oskar Werner.
Her first English-language film was also the first Technicolor movie to be filmed in Britain, 'Wings in the Morning,' opposite Hank Fonda (she played a gypsy girl masquerading as a young boy - and looked visually stunning).
She remained close with Tyrone even after turning him down, and visited him on the Madrid set of 'Solomon and Sheba' only two days before he died.
