    Won screenwriting Oscars for 'To Kill a Mockingbird' in 1963 and 'Tender Mercies' in 1984
    Won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama (1995)
    Recipient of the National Medal of Arts (2000)

Why he might be annoying:

    He provided the voice of the late Confederate president Jefferson Davis in a Ken Burns documentary for PBS.
    He was not on hand to accept his Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar in 1963 for 'To Kill a Mockingbird.'
    His screenplay for 'Tender Mercies' was rejected numerous times by American directors.
    Despite denying that the character 'Mac Sledge' in 'Tender Mercies' was not intended to be created for Robert Duvall, Duvall admitted that he helped Foote in developing Mac's character.
    He died just ten days before his 93rd birthday.

    He wrote and produced many off-Broadway plays.
    He was awarded an honorary doctorate from Carson-Newman College.
    Well aware of his failure to accept his first Oscar, he was on hand to accept his Best Original Screenplay Oscar in 1984 for 'Tender Mercies.'
    His screenplays helped three actors win Oscars (Gregory Peck, Duvall, and Geraldine Page).
    He was married to one lady his entire life.
