    He reportedly molested a 16-year-old altar boy at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, including putting his hands down the boy’s pants and grabbing his genitals while measuring him for a cassock (1971-72).
    A priest warned Pope John Paul II against naming McCarrick as Archbishop of Washington based on rumors of his inappropriate behavior.
    The Diocese of Metuchen and Archdiocese of Newark made financial settlements to two priests who claimed McCarrick had sexually abused them when they were seminary students (2005,2007).
    A few years before those settlements, he said that the Catholic Church should adopt a policy of ‘zero tolerance’ towards priests who molested minors (2002).
    He became the first member of the College of Cardinals to resign over accusations of sexual misconduct (July 28, 2018).
    When he was three, his father died from tuberculosis.
    As Archbishop of Newark, he established a drug prevention program and ministry for people with AIDS.
    He launched an initiative to ensure that Catholic school uniforms in his diocese were not made in sweatshops.
    He was an advocate for social justice, saying, ‘The Church cannot be authentic unless it takes care of the poor, the newcomers, the needy.
