The Resume

    (circa 1494-April 9, 1553)
    Born in Chinon, France
    Physician and author
Wrote 'Pantagruel' (1532) and 'Gargantua' (1534)

Why he might be annoying:

He spent time in hiding to avoid being arrested for heresy.
Several chapters of Gargantua and Pantagruel consist solely of lists of vulgar insults.
His sequels to Gargantua and Pantagruel had the less-than-inspired titles 'The Third Book of Pantagruel' (1546) and 'The Fourth Book of Pantagruel' (1552).
There is also an inferior 'Fifth Book of Pantagruel' which may or may not have been written by Rabelais.

Why he might not be annoying:

As a physician, he translated the works of Hippocrates.
He celebrated physical pleasures and mocked pomposity.
Milan Kundera wrote, 'Rabelais is, along with Cervantes, the founder of an entire art, the art of the novel.'
His last words were, 'I go to seek a great perhaps.'
